Students will kick off April by exploring the Civil Rights Movement and issues surrounding that time. Throughout April, students will do a close reading of the novel The Watsons Go to Birmingham- 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis. Students will study the language in the novel and explore how the author’s use of specific words, scenes, and/or chapters contributes to the novel’s theme and plot. Most of the reading will be done in class, however students will be responsible to do some reading for homework. It is important that they keep up with the reading to be prepared for class. At the end of this unit, students will be equipped with a broader understanding of historical fiction with a social issue focus. Students will conduct research and report their findings, and write a persuasive piece of writing.

By April 8th, all students should be done with the novel they have been reading for pleasure. Students will be creating Newspaper Book reports based on their novel. The majority of this assignment will be completed in class. Newspaper Book reports will be due May 5th.

As always, please email me anytime with questions or concerns. Thank you!

Happy Spring!
