Week of December 9th.....


Week of December 2nd.....
All of us are in the middle of the 3rd collection in our new curriculum.  The March Toward Freedom.  This is about Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and the Civil War.  Kids are very interested.  All work has been done in class.  We are reading Soldier's Heart by Gary Paulsen.  This follows a Union Soldier who is 16 going through many of the major battles of the war.  There will be some writing assignments.  Also DONE in class!  Three weeks til vacation.....


Week of September 16, 2016
PERIODS 3/7 and 4/5
This week we are producing our first formal writing assignment.  It is a summary for the first short story, My Favorite Chaperone.  Students are working very hard in class.  The only way they will have homework this week is if they do not complete the work in class.  The final draft of the summary is due on 9/16.  We have also been working on close reading.  Most of the work is done in class.  There will be little or no homework in ELA class.

PERIOD 6
We have just finished reading the short story, My Favorite Chaperone.  We are now reviewing major vocabulary for the story and working on the elements of plot.  Quiz on Thursday, Sept. 15th.













May 9th, 2016......please encourage all students to be reading their Holocaust novel outside of school.  For the blocks, the book project is due on May 23rd.  For period 7, it is due on June 3rd!!!  
There are 3 options:  Book report, Create a new cover for the book, Shoe Box Diorama.  The rubric will be given to students this week.  Thanks.          We are also doing IN-CLASS research on one of the Holocaust camps....PREZI, or GOOGLE SLIDES will be presented to the class by each group.

May 5, 2016......The students and I survived the first day of PARCC testing.  Seven more to go.    The only homework that students have for me is to be reading their Holocaust novels (Projects are due on May 23(periods 3/4 and 5/6) and June 1st (period 7)......we are working on Vocabulary packets in Extended homeroom...chapter 28 will be due on Friday, May 6th.  We are currently finished or are finishing The Diary of Anne Frank play and movie.  The PBS production is very good.  Hard to watch at times, but we do parts every day.
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL!!!!!!


Week of April 25th
  In all classes we are reading the drama, The Diary Of Anne Frank.  We will be finishing Act I this week with a quiz on Friday.  We will also watch part I of the PBS film....The Complete Story of Anne Frank.
In all classes students should also be completing the Vocal. Packet Chapter 27 by Thursday, April 28th.
The book project will be due on May 23rd for the block classes and on June 1st for period 7 class.

Week of April 15th-April 24th  VACATION!  Have a great one.   Read your Holocaust novel....book project will be due May 23rd!!!!








Week of December 14th-18th, 2015

This week we have a lot of work to do in order to finish up some things before the Holiday Break starts next Wednesday!  PERIOD 7 CLASS....we will be finishing the novel this week and also the film.  The poem, Nothing Gold Can Stay, by Robert Frost needs to be memorized by Friday, Dec. 18th.  It will be recited to me for a quiz grade.  The final test will be next Monday, Dec. 21st.  There will also be other classroom assignments.  These may have to be completed for HW if not finished in class.  Crossword puzzle, Cloze activity, and character acrostic.  

PERIODS 3/4 and 5/6
Vocabulary quiz on Friday, Dec. 18th that will cover words from Ch. 1-5.  Crossword puzzle page is a good review and is due on Tuesday.
Greek Mythology---- quiz on Heracles/Perseus will be on Wed. 12/16.
Heracles poster is due by Friday, 12/18.  Class time will be provided for this. 







Week of December 7th-11th....  2015
PERIODS 3/4 and 5/6--------
This week students are reading The Twelve Labors of Heracles in the GREEK MYTH books.  Their assignment for the week in class is to summarize each labor in 3-4 good sentences and title each labor....they also will illustrate each labor on a poster....this will be counted as a project grade in Lit. Class  (Periods 3/4 and 5/6)
These 2 classes should also be working on the Chapter 5 vocabulary packet in class.  Complete a little bit each day.  Upon my return next week----there will be a quiz on lists 1-5.

PERIOD 7-----
Read The Outsiders Chapters 6,7,8 and work on vocabulary list for the book.  Vocabulary maps should be done in class.

Of course for all students.....please continue to read your own SSR book!!!!

Week of September 21-25
     Periods 3/4 and 5/6......reading through Ch.5 The Outsiders by the end of the week.  We will have our first test on Ch. 1-4 on Friday, September 25th.  In class we are also composing a rough draft and editing for a final copy our first big writing assignment.  Students are rewriting a scene in the book as a different character, writing from a different point of view.  This will be due on Thursday of this week.  If students are not finishing in class they will need to do some work at home.
Period 7......we are continuing our journey to The Cay with Phillip and Timothy and Stew Cat.  We will be reading through Chapter 6 by Friday and students will have a quiz on Friday, 9/25.  We have done a short research project on a creature that we would find in the Caribbean Sea and created small posters in the lab on Tuesday,9/22.  Students will begin mapping the story on Wed. 9/23.




September 2, 2015.......We're baaaack!   Today in ELA classes the students were introduced to me and each other with a Human Scavenger Hunt.  This activity will be there first grade in class participation.  Ask them about it.  Students also should be showing you a letter from me about this year to be signed and returned....also a grade.  That is their HW.  They also will need to find an independent reading book.
REMINDER:  The summer reading assignment is due by this Friday.  September 4th.  It is also picture day at Herberg!!!  


August 23, 2015.....it is here....the week before you have to go back to school.  I will actually be going in tomorrow to get things all set for your arrival on Sept. 2.  Please be sure to bring a notebook and plenty of pens and pencils with you for that first day as it will be a full day.  Your summer reading requirement was to read one of 3 books and complete an on-line multiple choice quiz.  Please do so before the deadline.  This will count as one of your first grades in Lit class.  See you soon.
















May 19, 2015   Spring is finally here!  Honors Students have an essay due on Friday, May 22, 2015.  They should be discussing the changes in Oscar Schindler throughout the film.  At least 300 words typed.  They have more details in their notes....we are now starting NIGHT by Elie Wiesel.  Quick read with lots of self reflection....    Periods 4/5 and 6/7 will be finishing Night and watching clips of the film ....Freedom Writers.  Ask them about it.  They will have a mini project due...theme collage and writing that will be done some time next week. 
KEEP ON READING AND WRITING!!!!  GRADES CLOSE FOR THE YEAR ON JUNE 12th!!!!!!  Less than a month away.


May 12, 2015
Period 3 Honors.....students are finishing the film, Schindler's List.  An essay on the film and its major character will be due next Friday, May 22nd.  In the meantime we will be reading Night by Elie Wiesel.

Period 4/5.....Holocaust reading project is due by Friday, May 15th.  We are now halfway through the reading of Night.  Camp research projects will be started tomorrow, 5/13.

Period 6/7.....we are in the third section of Night.  Research presentations will start tomorrow.  Reading projects are due by Friday, May 15th.

PROGRESS REPORTS WILL BE SENT HOME THIS FRIDAY!!!!!!  Your last middle school progress report.



APRIL 27, 2015
periods 4/5 and 6/7 have a book project due on May 11th.  They should be reading a novel about the Holocaust. The first part of the assignment is to finish reading the book.  Some time will be given in class but students may also have to read at home.
project options:
1.  Typed Book Report......two pages typed addressing the setting of the story major characters (list and describe each ), and a complete plot summary.
2.  Power point or Prezi book report
3.  Poster advertising their novel that would encourage others to read it.  Images would be vital, quotes from the novel, reviews, etc.
4. Diorama displaying a favorite/important scene from the book.  A three paragraph explanation of the scene and why it is important to the book.
5.  Game board that would go with the book.  Plot points, characters, etc could be used.  This option is probably the most creative.

Some class time will be given for reading and working on the project.



Week of VACATION........please read something.  A good book, a comic book, the news, anything.  When we return we will be wrapping up the Civil Rights Movement work and then moving on to our unit on The Holocaust.  I will also try to assist in preparing you for the first PARCC assessment.  Enjoy your time off.  Get out in the fresh air.

February 5, 2015
honors class.....no HW!  We will finish reading Harriet Jacobs in class and then start composing an original sonnet to her!!!

Blocks........please study your 50 greek and Latin roots...FINAL TEST on Friday.  2/6.


February 4, 2015
     Honors class:  locate a copy of the poem, Sympathy, by Paul Lawrence Dunbar. Read it and analyze for devices and figurative language.  Start reading the Harriet Jacobs story.  Finish in class tomorrow.

period 6/7......7 entries are due now on your reading log.


February 3, 2015
     Honors class:   Today we read and analyzed the poem, "Peace" by Robert Coffin.  Looking for figurative language and poetic devices.  We also read a short bio of Claudette Colvin who is the forgotten teen who inspired the Montgomerey Bus Boycott before Roas Parks.  No homework this evening.

Block periods:  no homework.  These classes will have a 25 question multiple choice test on Greek and Latin roots on Friday, Feb. 6th.  In the meantime we will continue our study of the Civil Rights Movement.














WEEK OF NOVEMBER 3-7, 2014
As we close first quarter this week, and begin second quarter, classes are wrapping up a study of Edgar Allan Poe and two of his short stories, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Black Cat.  Classes are also looking at two of his poems, The Raven and The Bells.  There will be a test on Poe on Monday, November 10, 2014.

After that....we will begin a study of mythology.  All levels will be looking at myths from the Greeks as well as Native American cultures and other cultures as well.

Grades close Nov. 5, 2014....report cards will go home on Monday, November 10th.  PARENT CONFERENCES are November 12th 3-6pm and November 17th from 5-8pm.  



Week of September 15-19

Honors---We will be reading Chapters 2-5 in the novel, The Outsiders.  Vocabulary work you might have for homework.  Different forms of the words, synonyms, antonyms.
Quiz probably on Friday, September 19, 2014 on the first 3 chapters.

Periods 4/5 and 6/7
We will be continuing to read The Outsiders....Chapters 3,4,5.  In class we will do a lot of the work in class.  Students will be writing a narrative piece based on one of the scenes so far.  They will alter the point of view and rewrite the scene.  If work is not completed in class, you may have to finish for homework.

If you are absent from school, please check in during extended homework.  ALL students need to have an SSR book with them every day!!!
